How to overcome stage fright

When I took Acting I-Basics in college, I was nervous because I had started a week later, and everyone already knew each other. The teacher was very nice, even complimented me on my looks, as he introduced me to the class. I thought to myself , he's going to let me sit back and observe my first day. Imagine my horror when he called on me for the very first exercise, my very first day of class ! I was supposed to improvise a scene with a male student I never met, we had to decide ourselves what to do in like a couple minutes. My partner wanted to do a scene where we were pilots of an airplane going down, I suggested a married couple about to start an argument. He liked my idea, so we went for it. Well our teacher had told the class ahead of time, that those watching had to come up with an idea to change the scene, and jump in. When my partner and I started, we got so into it, and were so good at arguing, no one thought to get up and change our scene. The teacher had to yell out "okay!change the scene!". It was a lot of fun, and I learned the best way to overcome the fear, is to just do it. Sometime during the rest of that semester we were asked to write down some questions for the teacher, one student asked about overcoming stage fright. Our teacher suggested the same thing, lots of doing. If you can't afford lessons at a studio, see if there are any park districts, churches,or Y.M.C.A organizations that are offering workshops. If there is a community theatre nearby, see if you can join. If you're not ready for that, pick up a book of monologues to memorize. Pick a single person scene, memorize it, and practice saying it to yourself in a mirror. If you have access to a video camera, say your monologue into the camera, play it back, and see where you need work. Sometimes you may not hear certain ways you pronounce words, or you may mumble, or run all your words together.

Another thing my acting teacher mentioned, as he answered our list of questions, is that if acting is truly painful or stressful, why do it? If your fear doesn't ease over time, maybe it's not for you. But don't give up without really giving it your all. If you don't believe in yourself, why should anyone else? Like everything else, it takes practice. Practice, practice, practice. Those monologues will come in handy if you have to audition, and they want you to have one memorized already. There are also several books on the subject, try looking online and see if the book you chose has been rated by someone. If your local library doesn't have a good selection on the subject, you can request a book to be transfered from another library, to yours. You will need an author, or title to take to the librarian when you request a hold.

When you feel like you are just not good enough, or if you ever feel not attractive enough, watch some T.V. I guarantee you will see people in shows, and in commercials, that are not all that attractive, or talented. They just know how to sell themselves. It's called show business for a reason. I really miss acting class, and deeply regret not sticking with it. Who knows, I may go back. Break a leg !
